Other Information

We are using the northern map, which is the same one that was used for last year's meet. The maps are all 1:10,000 scale, and include a legend. Control description sheets will be separate.

The official course length and climb noted on the control description sheet is for the entire course without skipping any controls.

If you haven't been to LBJ National Grasslands before, you'll find that it is rougher and more "natural" than any of the city parks and camps we attend during the year. Once you get off the gravel roads, there isn't much indication that humans frequent this area. Some of the trails are overgrown and become indistinct in some places. There are a number of game and stock trails that are not always mapped. The soil is almost 100% sand in some areas, and as such, erodes very easily. As a result, narrow erosion gullies are often more distinct than the official trails.

The most prevalent users of this area of the park are horse riders. For your own personal safety, if you encounter horses on your course, please give them a wide berth and communicate with the riders. Horses don't like surprises.

Greenbriar is extremely prevalent and just downright nasty in many areas of the park. They are marked with green hatching on the map. Reasonable attempts have been made to direct the courses away from those areas, although the advanced courses may encounter patches of it in some sections of the course, depending on route choice. Greenbriar will be encountered even along trails used by Yellow participants so be aware and dress properly. Long pants highly recommended even for yellow course runners.

Although the open "grasslands" areas of the park look very runable, there are footing hazards in these areas. The ground is rough in many areas, creating tripping hazards. Also, there are many gullies which can drop out unexpectedly. For those of you that like to run while reading your map - watch out!

There are water stops along the courses, as noted on the map
